Rishi Sunak is a British politician. He has been Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, since 25 October, 2022. He has also been Leader of the Conservative Party, since 24 October, 2022, as well as, a Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks), since 7 May, 2015, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, from 24 July, 2019 to 13 February, 2020, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, from 13 February, 2020 to 5 July, 2022. He is the first non-white U.K. Prime Minister (though Boris Johnson had a Turkish great-grandfather), as well as the first U.K. Prime Minister who was not Protestant (or at least formally a Protestant) while in office. At the time when Rishi is Prime Minister, the leaders of Scotland and Ireland have also been of Indian origin, Humza Yousaf and Leo Varadkar, respectively.
Prime Minister Sunak is the son of Usha (Berry), a pharmacist, and Yashvir Sunak, a general practicioner. His parents are both African natives of Indian descent. His father was born in the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya. His mother was born in Tanganyika, later Tanzania. They moved with their families to the U.K. in the 1960s. His grandparents were Punjabi.
Prime Minister Sunak is married to Akshata Murty, with whom he has two children. Akshata is the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, a billionaire who founded multinational information technology company Infosys, and Sudha Murty (née Kulkarni), an educator, author, and philanthropist. Prime Minister Sunak’s wife Akshata is one of the wealthiest women in the U.K.
Rishi is a Hindu.
Prime Minister Sunak’s paternal grandfather was named Ramdas/Ram Das Sunak (the son of Buagwan Dass Sunak). Ramdas was from Gujranwala, now Pakistan, and moved to Nairobi in the 1930s.
