"Starting the day with a good workout. Who would have thought that they would say I have high cholesterol," Pia wrote recently. "With high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits grow, making it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Sometimes, those deposits can break suddenly and form a clot that causes a heart attack or stroke," says the Mayo Clinic. "The same heart-healthy lifestyle changes that can lower your cholesterol can help prevent you from having high cholesterol in the first place." For example, "Eat a low-salt diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables and whole grains."

"I learned that consistency is key," Pia said about fitness. "Instead of beating yourself up for 'failing,' show yourself some compassion. Revisit your goal. Think about those kids or that amazing vacation you want to take. Review your meal plans and take note of where and why you stumbled. Stay positive and get back on track. You've got this," says the Mayo Clinic.

"I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and major depression. All of the pain and suffering I endured all my life caught up to me and manifested itself in a fully self-destructive way," she said in her TED Talk. "You'd think that the crown and the title would be the bandage to all of that. You'd think that it would be enough to make sense of all the pain and the rejection, but it didn't," she added. "I want to paint a picture, not of a perfect beauty queen, but of a real person with real life experiences. There's no shame in admitting that you aren't perfect and that you need help," she said.

"I like to enjoy foods that keep my energy levels stable," says Pia to People. "Otherwise I'd likely crash at some point during the day." For example, she'll have a Greek yogurt for breakfast, a grilled-chicken Caesar salad for lunch and oven-roasted salmon for dinner.

Pia works her core by doing flutter kicks, static lunges, TRX rows and other targeted exercises that keep her strong. "The muscles of the torso are important for supporting and moving the spine, as well as stabilizing the pelvis, which influences posture and gait. Integrating static-hold exercises along with dynamic movements in your core workout is an effective way to challenge these important muscles and prepare them for life's daily demands," says ACE Fitness.
